Refresh and Rebirth

Refresh and Rebirth

A colourful ‘Kererix’ is chilling on a karaka branch. The bird is a cross between a Kererū (NZ’s native wood pigeon) and a Phoenix. Kererū are the only birds who can eat karaka berries, among other native species, and they spend a fair bit of time sitting in trees watching. Voted New Zealands’ Bird of the Year for 2018, you can donate to helping protect them.

This artwork was created for a group show ‘Soulstice’ in Whakatāne. The ideas behind it stem from spending time during winter in nature to soak in her beauty, to chill and refresh, in effect allowing a rebirth of sorts.
