A colourful ‘Kererix’ is chilling on a karaka branch. This bird is a cross between a Kererū (NZ’s endemic native wood pigeon) and a phoenix. Kererū can eat large karaka berries, helping the tree to regenerate. They spend a fair bit of time sitting in trees watching their surroundings, or you can hear them clumsily whirring through the bush. Voted New Zealands’ Bird of the Year for 2018, you can donate to help protect them.

This art piece was created for a group show ‘Soulstice’ in Whakatāne. The ideas behind it stem from spending time during winter to soak in nature’s beauty, to chill and refresh your batteries, allowing a rebirth of sorts.
